New bus line and 9-euro ticket

For the months of June, July and August, the federal government has launched a discounted Germany-wide ticket as a relief measure. Everyone at TU Dortmund University can also benefit from the 9-euro ticket: for employees, it is a good opportunity to try out both the way to work and across the Ruhr region and throughout Germany by bus and train and to leave the car at home.

All local transport throughout Germany can be used: buses, trams, city trains and underground trains as well as suburban trains, regional trains and regional express trains in 2nd class. Long-distance travel (e.g. ICE, IC, Thalys) and private providers such as FlixTrain are excluded. For all students, the semester ticket is valid for three months as a Germany-wide 9-Euro-Ticket.

The 9-Euro-Ticket can be purchased in the mobil.nrw ticket shop, in the apps of the transport associations and in customer centres as well as at ticket machines.

But what are the actual benefits of switching from car to public transport? On average, Germans drove about 17 kilometres each way to work in 2019 (Source: Bundesagentur für Arbeit). A car emits about 6.8 kg of CO2 on the way there and back. In comparison, public transport only emits 2.2 kg of CO2 (source: Quarks.de - CO2 calculator for cars, planes and Co). The 9-Euro-Ticket can therefore be a start so that the TU comes closer to the goal from the sustainability strategy to reduce its car journeys by 20% by 2025 compared to 2019.

In fact, it also saves money: with a consumption of 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres, only the fuel for one month costs over 95 € (litres of petrol for 2.15€ and 20 working days).  With the 9-Euro-Ticket you thus save over 80 €.

Therefore, we would like to motivate you all to use the 9-Euro-Ticket and try out the way to the university by public transport. Some public transport connections to the university are listed below. As a brand new feature, an express bus from Datteln via Waltrop and Mengede will stop at the university beginning from 12th of June.

The university is connected to the local transport network via the S-Bahn station Dortmund Universität and the bus stop of the same name. In addition, the H-Bahn runs between Dortmund Eichlinghofen, the South and North Campuses and the Technology Centre.
