At the end of September 2021, 40 participants from TU Dortmund University came together in a new workshop format. For two days, they discussed how TU Dortmund University can become more sustainable and what our university of the future should look like. Visions for a sustainable, future-proof campus were drafted and concrete projects were developed that can advance the transformation to a sustainable university.
University members from all status groups participated in the workshop: students, academic and non-academic staff and lecturers. On the first day, comprehensive visions were drafted that dealt with sustainability on campus and in university operations. The participants were asked to think as creatively and boundlessly as possible. Many visions dealt with the idea of making the university a place of encounter for both academics and citizens. Ecological sustainability was also a central theme. This included target questions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption as well as sustainable mobility.
On the second day, more concrete work was done on individual projects and project outlines were drawn up. The projects favoured by the participants included:
- a transparent efficiency analysis of all buildings
- a network for sustainable research
- expanded bicycle infrastructure
- incentives to switch to more sustainable mobility
- learning and working spaces close to nature.
The project outlines can now be further developed with the participation of the university community.
The many overlaps between the ideas and projects that emerged and the TU Dortmund University's sustainability strategy were particularly remarkable. At the same time, it became clear that the TU Dortmund members see many ideas, wishes and projects in areas that are underrepresented in the current version of the strategy.
