Joint Campus Campaign for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
- TU News
The purpose of around 15,000 printed sandwich bags for takeaways, which will be available in Student Services’ cafeterias and canteens from 20 November onwards, is to draw attention to the issue. The aim of the graphics printed on the bags is not only to raise awareness but also to offer concrete help: The illustrations show the “Signal For Help” – a sequence of hand movements that women can use in emergency situations.
QR codes with links to information pages
Apart from the illustrations, there are QR codes printed on the fold. These lead to the partners’ websites with further information about the campaign day and other initiatives dedicated to combating violence against women, as well as the telephone numbers of advice centers and the women’s refuge in Dortmund.
“Sadly, violence against women is an everyday phenomenon,” says Martina Stackelbeck, Central Equal Opportunities Officer at TU Dortmund University. “Almost every three days in Germany, a woman dies as a result of violence from her partner or ex-partner. That is why it is so important to make the ‘Signal For Help’ and support services known, which is what we are aiming to do with the sandwich bags. Sexism and abuse of power occur at universities too, as was established just recently by the UniSAFE study.”
Special campus flagging for the first time
The bag was designed by Viola Dessin, a design student at Fachhochschule Dortmund – University of Applied Sciences and Arts. She not only incorporated graphics with the “Signal For Help” but also the message “No To Violence Against Girls and Women” in thirteen languages.
In addition, special flags with the same design as the bags will fly for the first time on and around 25 November on the partners’ campuses to draw attention to the issue of violence against women and girls. They feature a larger version of the “Signal For Help”. With their orange color, they are an integral part of the global “Orange Your City” campaign.
