Conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

Goal 14: Life below water

The goal is divided into several sub-goals. These specify the protection and sustainable use of the oceans: Subgoals 14.1 and 14.3 address marine pollution and eutrophication (target year 2025) and ocean acidification. Sub-goals 14.2 and 14.5 call for the sustainable management and effective protection of marine and coastal ecosystems (both with target year 2020). 14.4 and 14.6 aim to end overfishing, illegal fishing and destructive fishing practices, including by eliminating counterproductive subsidies. Sub-goal 14.7 calls for economic benefits from the sustainable use of the oceans for developing countries.

Other aspects are the transfer of marine technologies (14.a), access of small-scale fishers to marine resources and markets (14.b) and the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (14.c).
