The month of May is all about diversity
- TU News
"Most of the events in Diversity Month are not one-off special events - on the contrary: the majority of the events are formats that are already established at TU Dortmund University and are held regularly," says Dr. Ute Zimmermann, head of the Equal Opportunities, Family and Diversity Office. The aim of Diversity Month is to make visible the activities of the many actors at TU Dortmund who work every day to create an awareness of diversity and inclusion in the academic world. "Diversity work is a cross-sectional task - together we are responsible at TU Dortmund University for promoting an open and respectful atmosphere in which everyone is welcome," says Zimmermann.

In addition to established exchange and information formats such as the language café organised by the International Office or the workshops of the Psychological Student Counselling Service, the Diversity Month in May offers two special highlights: From 9 to 25 May, the exhibition WE ARE PART OF CULTURE (WAPOC) will be on display in the foyer of Emil-Figge-Straße 50 on the North Campus. WAPOC was conceived by the project 100% Mensch and shows queer personalities from antiquity to the present day who have had a lasting impact on European society and culture. The portraits of the personalities were created by nationally and internationally renowned artists especially for WAPOC.
The exhibition promotes diversity, respect and acceptance. It creates role models and identification figures, and shows: lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, inter* and queer people have always played a decisive role in shaping society. The exhibition WE ARE PART OF CULTURE was funded 2017 - 2019 by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of the federal programme "Democracy Live!" and the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
At the opening of the exhibition on 9 May at 11 am, exhibition coordinator Holger Edmaier will be a guest and report on the art project.
The second highlight will be an action on German Diversity Day on 23 May: At lunchtime, a large TU logo will be created on the cafeteria bridge, which can be designed by anyone who wants to. Many TU Dortmund University diversity activists will be there to report on their activities.
