Sustainable and Efficient Energy Use at TU Dortmund University
- Nachhaltigkeitsbüro

TU Dortmund University is a major energy consumer, requiring as much electricity and heat as several thousand single-family homes. It is the shared responsibility of all members of the university to keep energy consumption low. To systematically manage and sustainably reduce energy consumption, an energy management system based on the international standard ISO 50001 is currently being implemented. The goal of this system is to transparently track energy consumption and, based on this data, develop and implement targeted measures to increase energy efficiency.
To coordinate these tasks, the Energy and Environmental Management Project Office was established in early 2026. It is overseeing the implementation of the energy management system, assisting with the collection and analysis of energy-related data, and will work closely with central administrative units, departments, and other stakeholders at the university. A key objective of the project office is to further integrate energy and environmental issues into the university’s day-to-day operations. In addition to analyzing technical and organizational potential, this includes engaging with the university community regarding measures, developments, and opportunities for participation.
With the filling of the positions of energy manager and building automation technician as of June 1, 2026, the project office is now fully staffed and can begin its work in earnest. In the future, updates on the project’s progress will be posted on the Sustainability Office’s website.
