Collection points for recyclable materials

There are central collection points for the various recyclables at TU.

In many TU buildings there were steel waste paper collection containers on the floors of the buildings. These are potential fire loads in escape routes and are therefore unfortunately no longer allowed to be placed in the corridors for fire safety reasons.

As an alternative, however, there is usually a central waste paper collection point in the basement of a building where waste paper can be handed in.

Technology contains many valuable and rare resources that can be recycled. As of now, the Sustainability Office is taking part in a NABU campaign. The collection box is located in the office at Vogelpothsweg 74.

Cell phones, smartphones or tablets are accepted - along with accessories (power supply, charging cable, battery, headset). The condition of the devices does not matter: both functional and defective devices can be handed in.

When the box is full, the Sustainability Office sends it to NABU's recycling partner AfB.
For the collected cell phones, Telefonica donates a fixed sum to NABU each year, which goes into the NABU insect protection fund.

The AStA of TU Dortmund University is one of many cork collection points in Germany. Anyone who has real cork (still found on some wine bottles, for example) at home can bring it to the AStA (Emil-Figge-Strasse 50), which will then transport it on collected for a recycling process.

The cork collection campaign is coordinated by NABU. The positive properties of the renewable raw material cork, such as heat and sound insulation, rot-proofness and poor combustibility, make cork granulate an environmentally friendly alternative to resource-consuming plastic fibers. Cork is a raw material - it does not belong in the garbage!

NABU uses the proceeds from the recycling process to support crane protection projects in Spain - the home of the cork oaks - and Germany.

Location & approach

The campus of the TU Dortmund University is located near the freeway junction Dortmund West, where the A45 crosses the B1/A40. The Dortmund-Eichlinghofen exit on the A45 leads to the South Campus, the Dortmund-Dorstfeld exit on the A40 leads to the North Campus. The university is signposted at both exits.

The "Dortmund Universität" S-Bahn station is located directly on the North Campus. From there, the S1 runs every 20 or 30 minutes to Dortmund main station and in the opposite direction to Düsseldorf main station via Bochum, Essen and Duisburg. In addition, the university can be reached by the bus lines 445, 447 and 462. Timetable information can be found on the homepage of the Rhine-Ruhr transport association, and DSW21 also offers an interactive route network map.

One of the landmarks of the TU Dortmund is the H-Bahn. Line 1 runs every 10 minutes between Dortmund Eichlinghofen and the Technology Center via Campus South and Dortmund University S, while Line 2 commutes every 5 minutes between Campus North and Campus South. It covers this distance in two minutes.

From Dortmund Airport, the AirportExpress takes just over 20 minutes to Dortmund main station and from there to the university by S-Bahn. A wider range of international flight connections is offered by Düsseldorf Airport, about 60 kilometers away, which can be reached directly by S-Bahn from the university's train station.
